How to Change the Waveform Colors in Mixvibes Cross DJ 3

Focus: Quick Tips

Software: Cross DJ 3

Changing the waveform colors option

The waveform colors option is located in the Display section of the Cross DJ Preferences. To open the Cross DJ Preferences, click on the cogwheel icon in the upper left hand corner of the software. With the Cross DJ Preferences window open, click on the Display button on the top menu bar. The Waveform Colours dropdown menu is near the bottom of the window.

Waveform color choices

There are 3 color choices in the Waveform Colours dropdown menu. The default option is Legacy. This is the color scheme that you should be familiar with if you have used Cross DJ before. Legacy colors the waveforms in Deck A and Deck B yellow and the waveforms in Deck C and Deck D red. While there is some variation in hue throughout the track, the waveforms are mostly mono-colored. The two newer options are Spectrum and** Nexus**. Spectrum changes the waveform colors to red, green, and blue based on the frequency of the sounds in the track that you have loaded. Nexus is similar to spectrum in that it shows a range of colors, but more closely resembles the appearance of the Legacy option with its blue and white hues. You can see the different waveform colors in the images below.

Which waveform colors option should you use?

You should use whatever colors you feel like using. Personally, I prefer the Spectrum option because it allows me to get a sense of the track’s structure in one quick glance. Frequency-based waveform colors will likely become the norm in all DJ software applications over time. I first saw them in Serato Scratch Live and again used them in Native Instruments Traktor Pro 2. Mixvibes recently introduced them in Cross DJ 3.0 and I am sure others will follow suit if they have not done so already.
